I Switched to a Mac...

I recently cracked the screen on my gifted HP laptop that I have had for the past 5 years or so. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It was time to purchase a new computer! So I went to Best Buy and started shopping. I looked at Lenovos, Microsoft Surface, HP’s all the latest and greatest windows computers. This what I have always had, this is what I am comfortable with, this is the language I speak. WHY would would I ever consider switching? I am comfortable with Word, Excel, Power Point, and I know what Control Alt Delete does. On that trip to Best Buy I didn’t even look at Mac’s. In my brain the Mac seemed foreign, confusing, like learning another language. Nothing that I wanted. Why would I want to start all over? That is scary!

I have had an iPhone since 2007 and I am comfortable with it but something about the Apple operating system seemed foreign to me. Then I started thinking about talks I have with clients where I am trying to get them to make changes to their lifestyle, and I started thinking what am I afraid of? Did I not think I could learn how to use it, or was I just defaulting to what I was most comfortable with?

Often when I talk to someone about their health/fitness I realize that they really don’t take it too seriously. It’s usually not a priority until they lose the ability to do what they were once able to. Whether that means they get injured, sick or if their sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits catch up with them.

Their goal in life is often to be comfortable and safe. Exercise? I am too old. Ouch. Nutrition? I don’t like the way that tastes. I don’t cook.

What I now know for a fact is that being safe is extremely limiting. My fear of trying something new almost led me to viruses and a limited lifespan with my new computer. As I type this blog on my new MacBook I realize that without risk there is very little reward.

If you try to eliminate all risk from your life, what you are actually doing is eliminating all potential possibilities from your life. Losing your ability to act because you are afraid.
— Edward Snowden on the JRE podcast

This where most people are with their health. Either it is not that important to them until they lose it, or they do what they have always done even if the results are less than optimal as long as they are comfortable. How many men know how to train because the played a sport in high school or did some body building splits in college? How many women avoid weight training because they don’t want to get too bulky? How many people don’t go to a yoga class because they are not flexible? How many humans don’t adjust their nutrition because they are afraid of the way things taste or don’t know their way around their kitchen?

If you do what you have always done you will get what you have always got...

If you are sick of getting what you have always gotten then something needs to change. In most cases what needs to change is your mindset about being uncomfortable or taking a risk or learning something new. For me this was buying a computer with a different operating system. For you it may be skipping breakfast for a month, prioritizing slee,p or taking a fitness class. If fear is holding you back from optimizing your life stop being afraid! It is time to take ACTION! Read a book, ask for help, hire a coach, be open minded to new information. If not, you are limiting the possibilities in your life…

My mission in life is to help others optimize theirs. I can do this in person or online. I don’t have all the answers but if you know you should be doing better, struggle with your health, or just want to look better naked, I would love to help…
